Ipv4 addressing
A
Ipv4 - Primary protocol we use
- 32 bit (4 octets - 1 byte each)
- uses dots to seperate

A
Ipv6 - slowly appearing
- 128 bit addresses
- split into 8 sections ( 16 bits each)
- uses colons to seperate
- written in hexidecimal values
- —can take out leading 0’s
- —-if full section has zeros , replace with double colon
- first 64 bits: network prefix
- last 64 host network address

Info you will need to configure IPv4
A
IP address
- every device needs unique IP address
Know subnet mask (255.255.255.0)
- used by local device to determine what subnet its on
- configured on the local workstation not a value transmitted across network
- you’ll ask for subnet mask all the time
Default gateway
- the router that allows you to communicate outside of local subnet
- default gateway must be IP address on the local subnet
