3.1 Cables & Adap: Fiber Network Cables Flashcards
1
Q
Optical fiber communication
A
Transmission through cables using light instead of radio frequencies
No RF signal
- difficult to monitor or tap
Light sign slow to degrade
- can transmit over longer distances
- can connect device far apart that we couldn’t with copper
Immune to radio or electrical interference
- no RF
2
Q
Fiber physical makeup
A
Thin fiber core
Thick ferrule cladding for protection
3
Q
Multi mode fiber (finer cable type)
A
When light goes into finer core, it will bounce around into different modes.
Short- range communication best
- 2 kilometers for 100 Mbit/s
- 550 meters for 10 gbit/s
Inexpensive light source
- LED
4
Q
Single mode Fiber
A
Light Moves straight in one direct path instead of bouncing around. Comes out in a single mode
Good for Long range communication
- over 80 km without addition processing
Expensive light source
- laser beams
