26 - Cervical screening and pathology Flashcards
What do you expect to see in a teratoma?
The 3 components of the embryo i.e. skin, sebaceous cyst, hair follicle, ganglian cells, brain, fat, muscle fibres
Teratoma/Dermoid Cyst?
Can occur in all ages including children.
Are derived from post-meitotic germ cells.
Composed of a variety of mature tissues derived from ecto/meso/endoderm. Are usually benign.
Adnexal mass?
Uterus mass
Mucinous cystadenoma?
Benign neoplasm of the mucous epithelium of the ovary.
Cystic tumour lined by mucinous epithelium.
Wide age range.
Pain or mass lesion is presentation (mass grows slowly over time - can get VERY big i.e. 2 kg)
- smooth suggests benign
- histology shows normal simple looking architecture
Mucinous vs serous epithelial tumours?
Mucinous is neoplasm of the mucinous epithelium serous is of the tubal type epithelium i.e. pseudostratified ciliated
These tumours can be benign (cystadenoma), borderline (in situ) or malignant (i.e. malignant serous papillary tumour)
What are the most common tumours?
Epithelial tumors
