Estuary
The tidal mouth of a long river, where the tide meets the stream
Benthos
The flora and fauna found on the bottom of in the bottom sediments, of a sea, lake or other body of water.
Nekton
Aquatic animals that are able to swim and move independently of water currents.
Plankton
The small and microscopic organisms drifting or floating in the sea or fresh water.
Upwelling
A rising of seawater, magma or other liquid.
Herbivore
An animal anatomically and physiologically adapted to eating plant material, for the main component of it’s diet
Carnivore
An organism that derived it’s energy and nutrient regiments from a diet consisting mostly of animal tissue
Omnivore
An animal or person that eats food of both plant and animal origin
Biotic Factor
Any living component that affects another organism
Abiotic Factor
A non living condition or thing that influences or affects an ecosystem and the organism in it.
Autotroph (producer)
An organism that produces complex organic compounds from simple substances present in its surroundings.
Heterotroph (consumer)
An organism that cannot fix carbon and uses organic carbon for growth.
Decomposes
Organisms that break dead or decaying organisms, and carry out the natural process of decomposition.
