Un dimanche après la messe
On a Sunday after mass
Nous avons monté le grand escalier de la mairie
We went up the big staircase of the town hall
On a cherché la porte de la bibliothèque municipale
We looked for the door to the public library
Je m’en faisais une fête
I was jumping for joy
Mon père l’a poussée, toute fois
Yet, my father pushed it open
C’était silencieux, le parquait craquait sous nos pieds
It was quiet, the wooden floor creaked beneath our feet
Deux hommes nous regardaient venir depuis un comptoir très haut barrant l’accès aux rayons
Sitting at a very high counter that blocked the way to the bookshelves, two men were watched us as we approached
L’un des hommes aussitôt : “Qu’est-ce que vous voulez comme livres ?”
One of the men replied right away “What kind of books would you like ?”
A la maison, on n’avait pas pensé qu’il fallait savoir d’avance ce qu’on voulait
It had not occurred to us at home that you were supposed to know what you wanted beforehand
