25.2 Green algae: precursors of land plants Flashcards

1
Q

Streprophyta

A

all land animals and green algea together. is a monophyletic group
- brown, red and gold algea are not part of this because they are actually protista.

Q

Green algae

A
  • alpha and beta carotenoids and chlorophyll
  • carbs stored as starch
  • divide among phragmoplasts (cell plates) layered in the same manner as embryophyes

Q

Chlorophyta

A

green algae that are not charophytes
- can live almost anywhere
- some are single celled
- some form colonies

Q

Chlorophta (reproduction)

A
  • asexually through fragmentation or spore production
  • sexually through fusion of gametes in fertilization
    - single-celled so don’t undergo mitosis
    - multicellular so there is a sporophyte from mitosis

Q

Charophytes

A

Have orders: Charales & Coleochaetes
- are the closest living thing to embryophytes
- large cells form their thallus
- do not have alternation of generations unlike land plants
- have lignin and sporopollenin like land plants

Recently order: Zygnematales
- discovered to portentially be closer to embryophytes than the other two.
