24.4 Fungal Parasites and pathogens Flashcards
Parasitism
one organism benefits at the expense of the other
Commensalism
one organism benefits without affecting the other
Fungi as plant pathogens
- They cause decay and death of plant
- Produce potent toxins that spoil crops
Example: Alfatoxins
- created a massive crop produce recall in some areas
Fungi as animal pathogens/parasites
Hard to kill with antibiotics as they aren’t prokaryotic
- various forms of mycosis including fungal allergies and skin targets
Mycosis
Disease due to fungi
Mycotoxicosis
Poisoning by foods contaminated by mycotoxins (fungal toxins)
Mycetismus
Ingestion of preformed toxins in posonous mushrooms
Superficial mycoses
A disease of the skin and appendiges
caused by dermatophytes or ringworms that lead to athlete’s foot or jocks itch
- antifungal medications could cave adverse side effects as they target things that are similar to animals since fungi are more closely related to humans than plants and prokaryotes.
Skin targets
Some fungi spread over the skin and cause animals such as frogs that breath through the skin that suffocate
Systemic mycoses
spread to internal organs through repsiratory
Opportunistic mycoses
fungi that are already common in all enviornments, or are part of the normal biota and and then grow out of hand due to the enviornment changing.
example: oral thrush
- happens due to change of pH in mouth
