25.2 Flashcards
How do stars come from nebula?
As the matter collapses, pressure from gravity causes the material at the center to heat up, creating a protostar
What is a protostar? What conditions does it need to become a main sequence star?
A protostar is the beginning of a star.
Needs to:
-have the core reach 10M K
-balance of gravity & gas pressure
What happens if a protostar can’t start hydrogen fusion?
It becomes a failed star and turns into a brown dwarf
How are super giants formed? Why is this stage so shirt?
Stars form into red giants as hydrogen fuel slows, the balance between gas pressure and gravity is lost —> surface cools to red
Explain white dwarf —> black dwarf
After small stars consume all their hydrogen fuel they collapse into a white dwarf.
Once the fuel is gone, it turns into a black dwarf
