25.15 Intermolecular Forces Flashcards
intermolecular forces
weak interactions between NEUTRAL molecules (not actual bonds)
ion-dipole force
polar molecules attracted to ions
dipole-dipole force
attractions between + end of one polar molecule with the - end of another
dipole-induced dipole force
permanent dipole in a polar molecule may induce a dipole momentarily in a NP molecule
London-dispersion force
induced dipole in a NP molecule may induce a dipole momentarily in another NP molecule
what does an atom need to have London dispersion forces?
just needs electrons
what increases dispersion forces?
increased size of molecule
what decreases dispersion forces?
amount of branching (decrease SA for dispersion forces)
what does stronger intermolecular forces lead to?
↑ MP/BP = ↑ viscosity = ↓ vapor pressure
what is required for a hydrogen bond?
1) covalent bond between H and N/O/F
2) lone pair on N/O/F atom
how does intermolecular hydrogen bond affect MP/BP?
↑ MP/BP
how does intramolecular hydrogen bond affect MP/BP?
↓ MP/BP
vapor pressure
how easy it is to evaporate a substance, the pressure exerted by the gaseous phase during evaporation
volatile
compounds with high vapor pressures, easy to evaporate and have weak intermolecular forces
what increases vapor pressure?
↑ VP = ↑ intermolecular forces = ↑ Temp
