2.5: Ideal Gasses Flashcards
1
Q
Real vs ideal gas
A
Ideal is only theoretical, does not exist in reality
2
Q
When does a gas convert from ideal to real
A
When conditions vary from STP/SATP
3
Q
Characteristics of ideal gases (7)
A
- Gases made of molecules in constant random motion, traveling in straight lines
- Molecules behave as rigid spheres
- Pressure due to collisions between container walls and molecules
- All collisions are perfectly elastic (no less of Ek)
- Temp and avg Ek are proportional
- No intermolecular forces between molecules
- Volume occupied is negligible relative to volume of container, as particles are extremely small
4
Q
Ideal gas constant
A
8.31 kPa x vol in L / mol x temp in K
5
Q
Ideal gas formula
A
PV = nrT
6
Q
Real gases characteristics
A
- High pressure gets particles closer together, size becoming more important in relation to container size
- Collisions between particles are not entirely elastic
- Particles slow down and begin to attract at lower temps, possibly eventually turning from gas to liquid
