25:Equilibria Flashcards
What are the features of a dynamic equilibrium
The rate of the forward reaction is the same as the rate of the reverse reaction.
The system must me closed.
The concentrations of each substance involved remain constant (as do the physical properties such as temperature and pressure)
What is a closed system
Reactants or products can’t leave or enter the system
What is the ΔH for a reversable reaction (in terms of Ea)
ΔH = Ea (forwards) - Ea (backwards)
What is Le Chatelier’s Principle
When one of the condition affecting the position of a dynamic equilibrium is altered, the position of the equilibrium will shift in the direction that opposes the change
What happens when you increase conc of a reactant in equilibrium
Equilibrium will shift in direction that decreases amount of that substance
What happens when you increase pressure in equilibrium
Equilibrium will shift in direction that produces fewer moles of gas
What happens when you increase temperature in equilibrium
Equilibrium will shift in endothermic direction
Which direction does ΔH refer to for a reversible direction
Forward
How does a catalyst affect position of equilibrium
Does not change the position of equilibrium but does make the system reach equilibrium faster
