24.4 Conservation and Preservation Flashcards
Definition of conservation
the maintenance of biodiversity through human management
What does conservation involve?
-the management of ecosystems so that nature all resources in them can be used without running it
-reclamation (process of restoring ecosystems that have been damaged or destroyed)
-diversity between species
-maintenance of a habitat
-sustainable development
Definition of preservation
protecting an area by restricting or banning human interference, so that the ecosystem is kept in its original state
What does preservation include?
- preserving ecologically, archaeologically or palaeontogically sensitive resources
-managing visitation
Argument against preservation
-no one is able to enjoy area
What is the economic importance of conservation?
-provide resources that humans need to survive and to provide an income
eg. rainforest species provide medicinal drugs, clothes and food that can be traded
What is the social importance of conservation?
-many enjoy the natural beauty of wild ecosystems
-use ecosystems for activities which are beneficial to health
-provide means of relaxation and exercise
What is the ethical importance of conservation?
-all organisms have the right to exist and most play an important role within their ecosystems
-many believe that we should not have the right to decide which organisms can survive, and which we could live without
-we have a moral responsibility for future generations to conserve the wide variety of existing natural ecosystems
What is in-situ conservation?
conservation efforts within the original habitat
Examples of in-situ conservation
-conservation areas
-orangutang islands
-national parks
-biosphere reserves
Advantages of in-situ conservation
-behavioural instincts stay the same
-conserve large number of individuals
-conserves a large biodiversity
-implications from other species
-ecotourism
Disadvantages of in-situ conservation
-issue may still be there
-locals need to be on board
-need to take into account immigration and emmigration
-new issues may develop
What is ex-situ conservation
removing species, help breeding, preserve issues and reintroduce
Examples of ex-situ conservation
-aquarium
-zoological parks
-botanical gardens
-gene bank
Advantages of ex-situ conservation
-removes them from further danger
-allows population size to increase before reintroduction
-brings in more funding and education
