Q

neurones (nerve cells)

A
  • specialised cells adapted to rapidly carrying nerve impulses from one part of the body to another
  • they are the key cells that make up the nervous system

Q

what does the automatic nervous system do

A
  • carries nerve impulses to glands, smooth muscle and cardiac muscle and is not under voluntary control (involuntary)

Q

what is the the spinal chord

A
  • a column of nervous tissue that runs along the back and lies inside the vertebral column for protection

Q

what is a cell body

A
  • contains nucleus

- contains large amounts of ER; associated with the produced of protiens and neurotransmitters

15
Q

what are dendrons

A
  • are small extensions of the cell body

- they subdivide into smaller branched fibres called dendrites; carry nerve impulses towards the cell body

16
Q

what is an axon

A
  • a single long fibre that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body
  • has an axon terminal at the end
17
Q

what is a myelin sheath

A
  • forms a covering to the axon

- made up of Schwann cells; membrane is rich with a lipid known as myelin

18
Q

what are Schwann cells

A
  • cells surrounding the axon; protecting it and providing it insulation
  • carry out phagocytosis to remove cell debris
  • play a part in nerve regenration
19
Q

what are nodes of Ranvier

A
  • gaps between adjacent Schwann cells where there is no myelin sheath
