What voltage is the auxiliary converter powered at and what is its primary function?
The converter is powered at 240v
It’s primary function is to provide 110v DC control supplies for the units DC equipment and also provides battery charging.
How is the auxiliary converter protected?
Auxiliary control MCB located in the TS MCB panel
What’s indications will the driver receive If the auxiliary control MCB trips?
Battery charging light will go to red and your interior lights will revert to emergency lighting.
Must key out to check general fault light is on In DMS and auxiliary converter fault light will be on in the TS.
What potential faults can occur in relation to battery charging and auxiliary converter? And what remedial actions can you take?
The auxiliary control MCB could trip. The auxiliary light on the TS will be illuminated.
Try to trip MCB back in.
If not then lower pantograph, press aux trip/off button , then aux on and pan up for a full reset.
If it can’t be reset then unit must be withdrawn from service within 40 minutes
What systems run off the 110v DC Supply?
AWS,DRA,DSD,Vigilance.
Auxiliary compressor. Door control equipment
Brake unit. Emergency lights
Cab lights All exterior lights
GSM-R. PA Passcomm
PBC. Saloon lighting
Wheel slip equipment.
What systems run from the 240v AC Supply?
5 main things: Main compressor Aux converter Traction converter fans In train heating Main transformer oil pump.
Auxiliary converter Cab heating Main compressor Shore supply. Immersion heater Main transformer oil pump Retention tank heater Saloon heating. Toilet extractor fan Traction converter case fans Voltage transformer in toilet
How do the MCBs work on DC circuit?
Work on heat so if it exceeds the ampere rating it will trip.
