2.4 - Variation Flashcards
What are the causes of variation in a population?
Some variation is genetic, environmental or both.
Where do children get the genetic information from?
Half from each parent
What is a haploid?
A sex cell (gamete) that contains one set of unpaired chromosomes
Haploid (egg - 23 chrom) + haploid (sperm - 23 chrom) =
Diploid (zygote - 46 chrom)
What are some examples of genetic variation?
Blood group, skin color, eye color, gender.
What are some environmental causes of variation in a animal or plant?
Climate Diet Accidents (scar) Culture (accent) Lifestyle
What is continuous variation? Give examples.
A characteristic that changes gradually over a range of values (height, weight, hand span)
What is discontinuous variation? Give examples.
A characteristic with only a limited number of possible values ( gender, eye color, blood group)
What happens in asexual reproduction?
Only one parent cell is needed
No fusion of gametes
Offspring produced is genetically the same as parent (clones)
What are some examples of organisms that use asexual reproduction?
Bacteria
Production of spores by fungi
What happens in sexual reproduction?
Requires tow parents ( male/ female).
Fertalisation is the fusion of the nucleus of the male and female gamete.
