How to work out a magnification?
Total magnification = Eyepiece lens magnification x Objective lens magnification
Eyepiece
Part of a microscope where you look
Arm
Supports and connects the eyepiece lens to the base; also a handle for carrying
Focus knob
Used to bring object in and out of focus
Objective lens
Gathers light from the specimen, magnifies the image of the specimen
Stage
Platform that holds the slide for obeservation
Light
Provides light to illuminate the specimen, sometimes used with a mirror
Stage clip
Holds slide in place
Objective lens
Different lens has different magnification
Cover slip
Keep solid specimens pressed flat, and liquid samples shaped into a flat layer of even thickness
Slide
Holds object for magnification under microscope
Steps to placing a specimen
- Add a drop of sterile water on slide
- Place specimen on water
- Place the edge of coverslip on slide so it touches the water
- Slowly lower coverslip to prevent forming air bubbles
- Ensure specimen is nicely under coverslip on slide
- Place slide on stage
