2.4 Methods of studying the brain Flashcards
EEG scan
electroencephalograph A device that records electrical activity in the brain.
CT scan
computed tomography scan A computer enhanced imaging technique in which an xray beam is passed through the body at different angles to generate 3d image of bodily structures aka cat scan. (computerized axial tomography.
PET scan
(position emission tomography) An imaging technique in which radioactive sugar tracer is injected into the bloodstream and used too measure the levels of activity in certain parts of the brain.
MRI scan
magnetic resonance imaging) A technique that uses a magnetic field to create a computerized image of internal body parts.
lesioning
In studies of the brain functioning, the intentional destruction of brain tissue in order to observe the effects on behavior.
electrical stimulation
Using electricity to stimulate parts of the brain in order to observe their characteristics.
Electrical recording
Records electrical wave in the brain to monitor specific types of behaviors.
