2.4 Inheritance Flashcards
Locus
The location of a gene on a chromosome.
Homologous Chromosomes
Chromosome pairs that are:
- Approximately the same size
- same banding pattern (same gene on the same corresponding loci)
Alleles
Different versions of a gene.
e.g. Eye colour gene: blue vs brown allele
Dominant Allele
A dominant allele will be expressed no matter what, only needs one to express the trait. (Ee or EE)
Recessive Allele
A recessive allele will only be expressed if both chromosomes carry that allele. (ee)
Genotype
What alleles you have
Phenotype
physical trait expressed
Homozygous dominant
A genotype where an individual inherits two copies of a dominant gene.
Homozygous Recessive
A genotype where an individual inherits two copies of a recessive gene.
Heterozygous genotype
Having two different versions of a gene, one inherited from each parent.
