2.3 Cell Division - Mitosis Flashcards
Mitosis
It is a type of cell division that occurs in body (somatic) cells, duplicating itself forming two identical ‘daughter’ cells.
Diploid
Two sets of chromosomes (one from each parent).
Interphase
-To prepare for cell division, The cell must first replicate its DNA.
-All 46 chromosomes replicate to have 2 chromatids.
Prophase
Chromosomes condense, and the nuclear membrane breaks down and disappears.
Metaphase
The 46 chromosomes line up in single file. Spindle fibers attach to centromeres.
Anaphase
The sister chromatids separate, and move to the opposite poles of the cell.
Telophase
Nuclear membrane reforms, creating diploids, identical to the parent cell.
Cytokinesis
Cytoplasm divides, cell membranes form, chromosomes decondense, creating two daughter cells.
What are the 6 stages of Mitosis?
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, and Cytokinesis
