24. Endocrine Disorders Flashcards
A condition in which the pituitary gland makes too much growth hormone after normal growth of the skeleton is finished.
Acromegaly
The anterior part of the pituitary gland is derived from the embryonic pharynx and is primarily glandular.
Adenohypophysis
A rare disorder in which the adrenal glands do not make enough of certain hormones. Symptoms include weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness, fatigue, low blood sugar, low blood pressure, and patchy or dark skin.
Addison’s Disease
A disorder that occurs when the adrenal glands don’t make enough of certain hormones. Commonly known as Addison’s Disease.
Adrenal insufficiency
A hormone produced by the pituitary gland that regulates the production of cortisol and androgens. Controlled by the HPA Axis.
AdrenoCorticoTropic Hormone (ACTH)
A hormone that helps blood vessels constrict and helps the kidneys control the amount of water and salt in the body.
AntiDiueretic Hormone (ADH)
A hormone that helps blood vessels constrict and helps the kidneys control the amount of water and salt in the body.
Arginine VasoPressin (AVP)
A hormone made by the adrenal cortex (the outer layer of the adrenal gland). It helps the body use glucose, protein, and fats. Called Hydrocortisone when made in the lab.
Cortisol
A rare pituitary disorder that occurs when the body produces too much cortisol, a hormone that helps the body respond to stress, regulate blood sugar, and turn food into energy.
