23C. Respect for Individuals Flashcards
Foreign National Anthems
- Amn may pay same respect as rendered to US National Anthem
Salute
Purpose:
- sign of respect
- greeting
- expression of recognition
Appropriate to:
- POTUS
- V-POTUS
- SECDEF
- Service Secretaries
- all superior commissioned/warrant officers
- all Medal of Honor recipients
- superior officers of friendly nations
- Uniformed Services of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Admin
- US Public Health Services
Exchange:
- junior member salutes first
- hold until acknowledged
- must allow time for senior member to return it
- exercise good judgement
- not rendered indoors
Special Circumstances:
- if no free hands, stop, set down items, render salute
- if senior is not uniform/civilian, but junior is, render salute

Retiree Activities Program
Retired Grade
- Retirees will be addressed by their retired grade
Formal Reporting
Entrance:
- knock once
- salute indoors (exception)
- stop two paces from officer’s desk
- report “Sir, SSgt Johnson reports as ordered”
Departure:
- salute, hold until acknowledged
- facing movement
- depart
Entering Vehicles/Boats
- enter in reverse order of rank
- junior to senior’s left
- senior last to enter/first to exit
Saluting in Formation
- wait for command from person in charge of formation
- do not salute unless given command
Saluting in a Work Detail
- individual workers do not salute
- person in charge of detail salutes for everyone
Position of Honor
- given to the senior official when walking, riding, or sitting
- junior takes position to senior’s left
Distinguished Visitors (DV)
- General or Flag Officer
- Gov official with rank equivalent to Brigadier General or higher
- Foreign military designated by Under Secretary of the AF for International Affairs
Saluting in PT Gear
- Not required in PT gear
- except in special environments
- except for reveille and retreat (outdoors)
Saluting at a Military Funeral in Uniform
Salute During:
- the caisson or hearse as it passes
- the casket as it is carried past
- during the firing of volleys
- during Taps
