2.3 Stock Sizes of Polymers Flashcards
Name the stock forms polymers are available in
- Sheet
- Film
- Granules (PP)
- Rod and other extruded forms
- Foam
- Powder
What are the different types of polymer sheets?
- Solid cast or extruded sheet
- Fluted sheet
- Laminated sheet (Acrylic)
What are polymer powders used for?
As a coating for metal surfaces to protect them against corrosion
What is foam board?
It’s a lamination of two white card face layers sandwiched around a foam core
What is Fluted PP?
It’s a lightweight extruded sheet with integrated channels or flutes
What is Translucent PP?
It’s a very tough, tear and water-resistant material that may be coloured or clear and can be printed on and laser cut safely
Used for document folders and lightweight boxes as well as strong plastic packaging
What is Styrofoam?
It’s a dense extruded foam that is usually blue in colour and commonly used for model-making
What is LDPE sheet?
It’s a tough flexible material with very good chemical resistance commonly used for packaging including air pillows and bubble wrap
What is Plastazote foam?
It’s an engineered foam which is tough, flexible and very lightweight used for protective packaging, exercise and yoga mats
What is Cellulose Acetate?
It’s a tough, transparent, naturally derived thermoplastic film that is biodegradable
Used as a photographic film and biodegradable packing material
What is PLA?
It’s a biodegradable polymer, used as a sustainable alternative to petrochemical based packaging
