2.3 Sports Psycology Topics Flashcards
Trait theory - nature
-We are born with innate characteristics called traits
-they are stable, consistent and enduring
-extroverted people will always give their opinion and be loud (it’s naturally in them)
The social learning approach - nurture
-suggest behaviour is learned from significant other by socialisation
-we learn from people we holding highest team because role models, friends, parents etc
-we copy behaviour that we see as successful and is consistently shown to us (reinforce)
Socialisation
Developing personality treats by associating and learning from others
Two types of socialisation?
Primary-from our family
Secondary schools, media etc
The interactionist perspective definition
A theory which combines traits and social learning to predict behaviour in a specific situation
More on The interactionist perspective
-The definition of this indicates that born traits are adapted according to the situation
-summarised by the formula B = f(PxE) - Lewin’s idea
-Behaviour is adapted to the environment
Bandura’s Social Learning Theory

The Hollander Approach to the Interactionist theory
-The core of the performer (values and beliefs)
-Typical responses (use of inherent traits displayed in specific situations)
-Role related behaviour(performer may adapt a very specific role when the situation demands eg in a tight games they track back)
How can the Interactionist Perspective Improve Performance?
-coach can predict aggressive behaviour , and could remove the player before they get sent off
-Can replicate the situations in training so they get more comfortable with them in games (Eg , a nervous player can train in front of a crowd)
-coach can try to change play behaviour by encouraging them to adapt circumstances (eg call the anxious player before penalty)
-if a player understands their behaviours, they can monitor and adapted themselves
-Core values may be hard to alter so they need to be reinforced by others, e.g. captain
