2.3 monomers polymers and macromolecules Flashcards
What is a macromolecule?
A giant molecule
What are the three types of macromolecules in living organisms?
Polysaccharides
Proteins (polypeptides)
Nucleic acids (polynucleotides)
What is a polymer?
A giant molecule made from many similar repeating sub units (joint together in a chain)
What is a monomer?
A relatively simple molecule which is used as a basic building block for the synthesis of a polymer
Monomers are joined together by
Covalent bonds usually by condensation reaction
What are some examples of covalent bonds found in biological molecules?
Glycolic bond, ester bond, phosphodiester bond and peptide bond
What is making biological polymers from monomers relatively simple?
Because the same reaction is repeated many times
What is condensation reaction?
Chemical reaction involving the joining together of two molecules by removal of water molecules
What can be done to break down a polymer?
Adding water(hydrolysis)
What is hydrolysis?
Chemical reaction in which a chemical bond is broken by the addition of a water molecule
What is the monomer for polysaccharide?
Monosaccharide
What is the monomer for proteins?
Amino acids
What is the monomer of nucleic acids?
Nucleotides
What forms the nucleotide?
Monosaccharide and organic base
What is an example of natural occurring polymer?
Cellulose and rubber
