2.3 Metabolic Rate Flashcards
What is metabolic rate
The quantity of the energy consumed by an organism per unit time
What is the equation for the aerobic respiration in cells
Glucose + oxygen > Co2 + Water _ energy
What ways can metabolic rate be measure by
Oxygen consumption per unit time, Co2 production per unit time, Energy production per unit time
Name 3 pieces of apparatus to measure metabolic rate
Calorimeter, Respirometer, Oxygen and carbon dioxide probes
Explain how a calorimeter measures metabolic rate
It measure heat produced by an organism over a period of time. Heat produces is transferred to surrounding water. Temperature is measure over a period of time allowing metabolic rate to be calculated
Explain how a respirometer measure metabolic rate
Measures O2 uptake or Co2 output over a period of time. Air with Co2 removed is used by the organism and the Co2 it breathes is absorbed. Therefor the volume of air the the system is reducing, drawing the liquid up the tube
What is the most effective way to carry out a control experiment
Remove the living material
How do Co2 and oxygen probes measure metabolic rate
The volume of O2 that an organism consumes and the volume of Co2 it gives out
Why does an organisms metabolic rate raise
When there is a increasing energy demand
What happens as a result of increase in metabolic rate
Consumption of oxygen increases, Aerobic respiration increases
What do organisms with high metabolic rates require
Efficient delivery of oxygen to cells
What is the order of animals with highest metabolic rate to lowest
- Birds and mammals 2. Retiles and amphibians 3. Fish
How many chambers does a fishes heart have
2, 1 atrium and 1 ventricle
How many chambers does an amphibians heart have
3, 1 ventricle and 2 atria
What type of circulation do amphibians have
Double incomplete, oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are mixed
