What does legislation influence?
Staff (Staffing numbers, level of education).
Premises (e.g. fire exits, accessibility).
Practices (e.g. reporting, storage of information).
Whats the influence on employers?
Employers must provide staff with training and PPE, and produce a Health and Safety Policy that is reviewed regularly.
Whats the influence on employees?
Employees must cooperate with health and safety regulations in the workplace e.g. fire procedures, completing training and risk assessments and wearing PPE.
Influence on premises?
Maintenance procedures.
Availability of hand washing facilities.
Sufficient ventilation, light and heating to reduce physical hazards and working conditions hazards.
Escape routes and exits must be clear well signposted.
Influence on practices?
Policies which require staff to wear task specific PPE and follow correct hygiene practices.
Another influence on practice?
Correct recording and storing of information(e.g. Reporting of accidents and injuries, COSHH file, safe storage of personal information).
Influence on staff?
Staffing levels (staff-to-client ratio).
Provision of effective supervision and training for staff.
The implementation of policies and procedures in relation to health and safety.
Influence of legislation?
Direct implications on health, social care and childcare settings and as future practitioners it is important for us to understand how these will influence our jobs day-to-day.
Example of HASAWA on practices?
All activities and equipment must be risk assessed and staff must undergo regular training that promotes safety in the workplace.
Example of HASAWA on premises?
Fire alarms and fire extinguishers must be on premises and be regularly checked for replacement..
