What is an Altar?
A table for sacrifice.
What does Amen mean?
It is saying ‘I do believe.’
What is Benediction?
A special time of prayer, adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
What is the Blessed Sacrament?
The real presence of Jesus under the appearance of bread and wine.
Who is the Celebrant?
The deacon, priest or bishop who leads the liturgy.
What is a Chalice?
The cup for the wine at Mass.
What is Communion?
We receive the Body and Blood of Jesus.
What is Consecration?
The action of the priest at Mass which, by the power of the Holy Spirit, changes the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ.
What is the Creed?
We profess our belief in the basic truths of our faith.
What does Eucharist mean?
Literally ’Thanksgiving’. It is sometimes used for the Mass, or the Body and Blood of Jesus in particular.
What is the Eucharistic Prayer?
A prayer, praising God, calling down the Holy Spirit, retelling the Last Supper story, and with the words of consecration.
What does it mean to Genuflect?
To go down on one knee in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament when you enter or leave a Catholic church.
What is the Gloria?
A song of rejoicing in the goodness of God. This is said or sung.
What is the Gospel?
An account of Jesus’ life or teaching.
What is the Host?
The piece of unleavened bread that is used in the Mass to become the Body of the Lord Jesus.
What was the Last Supper?
The Seder meal which Jesus celebrated with his disciples in the upper room the night before he died.
What is Liturgy?
The worship of God in public prayer. The Liturgy of the Church is made up of ceremonies for which there are clear and fixed guidelines.
What is Mass?
Also called Eucharist. The celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus.
What is a Monstrance?
A vessel in which the Blessed Sacrament is placed for adoration.
What is a Rite?
The formal set of words and actions to be used in a Liturgy.
What are the different parts of the mass?
- The Opening Rite
- The Penitential Rite
- The Liturgy of the Word
- The Liturgy of the Eucharist
What begins the Mass?
The Mass begins with the Sign of the Cross.
What is the purpose of the Penitential Rite?
We are called to mind our sins and ask for God’s forgiveness at the beginning of Mass. We are given the opportunity to reflect on how we have treated one another. This prepares us to celebrate the Mass with a clear conscience, united with the whole Catholic community.
What are the stages of the Liturgy of the Word?
The stages include First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, Second Reading, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel, Homily, Prayers of the Faithful, and Creed.
