2.3 Errors In Meiosis Flashcards
What are the two processes of Meiosis that can lead to Errors?
Independent Assortment: When chromosomes line up
Crossing over: The exchange of DNA segments
What is the name of the condition that causes gametes to have an abnormal amount of chromosomes
Aneuploidy
What is non-disjunction?
When sister chromatids don’t separate in anaphase 1 or 2
What is the condition caused by missing a chromosome?
Monosomy
What is the condition that causes an extra chromosome?
Polysomy
What does down syndrome result in?
3 copies of chromosome 21 instead of 2
What are the 4 ways that chromosomes can have an abnormal structure during crossing over?
Deletion, Duplication, Inversion, Translocation
What occurs in translocation?
The gene attaches to a non-homologous chromosome (ex. Chromosome 2 attaches to chromosome 10)
What occurs in Inversion?
The gene attaches to a homologous chromosome but in opposite order (top w the others bottom)
What happens in Duplication?
A gene attaches to a complete chromosome and results in duplicated section.
What happens in Deletion?
The gene (piece of chromosome) fails to attach and gets lost
