2.3 Chemical Bonds Flashcards
What happens with electrons during non polar bonds?
equal sharing of electrons
What happens with electrons during ionic bonds?
no sharing of electrons in bond
What happens with electrons during polar bonds?
unequal sharing of electrons
Differentiate between a polar and non polar covalent bond
In polar the bonding electrons share unequally between two atoms, in non polar the bonding electrons share equally
How does electronegativity determine what type of bond two atoms will form?
ionic bonds have a larger difference in electronegativity and covalent bonds will result in a smaller difference
What type of bond will form between Mg and Cl, and why?
ionic bond because the oppositely charged magnesium and chloride ions attract one another.
How do ionic substance dissolved in water?
separate in atoms
How do covalent substance dissolved in water?
separate in molecules
What does bonding provide?
it provides stability
