2.3: Adaptations for transport in blood vessels Flashcards
How does the blood move?
Artery > arteriole > capillary > venule > vein > back to heart.
What does an artery do?
Take blood away from the heart.
What do veins do?
Take blood into the heart.
What do capillaries do?
They are the site of gas exchange and tissue fluid formation.
What is the tunica externa?
Consists of collagen, prevents blood vessel from stretching so it can maintain high pressure.
Why must the blood vessel be prevented from stretching?
So it can maintain a high pressure.
The tunica media is..?
In the middle.
The tunica intima is?
The inner.
What are capillaries made of?
A single layer of endothelial cells.
Due to being made of a single layer, capillaries have..?
A short diffusion path.
