2.3-2.4 Vocab Flashcards
Basic rules of island Biogeography
1) Larger Islands support more total species
2) Island closer to main land support more species
Why is the first rule true
Larger Islands- higher ecosystem diversity ( lots of plants and animals ) which leads to more niches in the area + lower extiction rate
Why is the second rule true
Easier for more species to migrate to island from mainland
Extremophiles
Organisms with optional growth in environments that are extreme for other species
Ecological Range Tolerance
Range of ABIOTIC condidyions that an organism can endure before injury or death
Optimal range
Range wher organism survives, grows, reproduces
Zone of physiological stress
range where organisms survive, but experience some stress such as infertility, lack of growth, decreased activity, etc. (classroom is chilly)
Limiting Factors
Anything that constrains a population’s size by slowing or stopping it from growing
Salinity
Measure of salt content
pH (acidity)
Measure of H+ ions
Temperature
Effect of insolation
Dissolved Oxygen
Oxygen present in water
Wave Action
Measure of wave motion
Turbidity
Cloudiness of water
Soil Moisture
Ratio of water held to dry soil
