Performance Related Pay
rewarding an employee through momentary compensation when performing their duties that equals/exceeds predetermined criteria
short term: pay increases, bonuses, commissions
long term: profit sharing, gainsharing, share plans
adv: rewards are predictable and easily calculated, will only apply when there is performance improvement
dis: business may not be able to afford it, not all employees are motivated by money
Career Advancements
occurs when a person takes on a job that carries greater responsibility or increased opportunities to provide leadership
short term: pay rise, increased job security, satisfies maslow’s lower order needs, motivating
long term: can satisfy maslow’s higher order needs, involvement in leadership satisfies social needs
adv: provides means of retaining valuable employees, satisfy employees who desire extra responsibilities
dis: promotion above capabilities, have to compete for positions which could lead to conflicts
Investment In Training
direction of finance/resources into teaching off skills to employees
short term: additional training, increased skills, can lead to higher offered pay
long term: satisfies maslow’s theory - esteem/self actualisation with sense of accomplishment
adv: indicates that the business values employee contribution, increased employee retention as staff loyalty and motivation increases
dis: business may not be able to afford training, business may have to pay for training only to have the employee leave the business
Support
assistance/service, such as counselling/mentoring provided by a business to help employees in difficult times
short/long term: support motivates them to do better, can provide long term motivation, encourages motivation
adv: no cost, helps employees develop meaningful professional relationships
dis: can be hard to find reasons to support employees, employees may become too dependent on support or the person offering it
Sanctions
penalty/form of discipline imposed on individuals
short/long term: fear of sanctions can be motivating, can influence maslow’s lower order needs (physiological/safety), only impacts short term motivation
adv: can motivate poor performance to be improved, quickly puts an end to poor performance or behaviour
dis: only short term motivator, may cause resentment, excessive emphasis can reduce employee sense of belonging
