What is the GOC
- GOC is the UK regulator for optical professions with the responsibility of setting standards
- GOC codes of conduct defines the standard of behaviour and performance expected of all optoms and DOs

- Registration - provide the registration of opticians and the enrolment of limited business operating as an optometry business
- Regulation - regulate standards and practice in optical professions
- Restriction - impose restrictions on the testing of sight and supply of optical appliances

What a must a sight test include
- external examination of the eye
- intra-ocular examination of the eye
- any additional tests that are necessary
What is the fitness to practice procedure
- Complaint is put forward to the GOC
- Could be due to allegations of poor performance or inappropriate conduct
- Complaint investigated by 2 examiners
- If believed to be valid then the complaint is heard by a fitness to practice hearing
- Further action may be taken or a warning issued
What is the medicines act
- Act of parliament that governs the control of medicines for human use and for veterinary use
- the act defines 3 categories, GS, POM and P

What is the mental capacity act 2005
This act provides framework for those that lack capacity to make decisions for themselves, or who have capacity and want to make preparations for a time when they may lack capacity in the future
5 principles of the MCA
- Never assume that a px lacks capacity
- Always assist the px in decision making for themselves
- Don’t assume px lacks capacity because of unwise decisions
- If you make a decision for someone, always do so in their best interest
- If tx and care is provided for someone, it must be done so with the least restrictions put on their human rights and freedoms
When does someone leak capacity according to the MCA
- if they cannot understand the information required to make the decision
- they cannot retain the information
- they cannot woiegh up the information required for the decision
What is gillick competence
- when a child is able to consent to their medical treatment
- have to be satisfied that they are not only mature enough, but possess the intelligence and ability to understand the implications of treatment
