22.1 The Concept of Immunity Flashcards
1
Q
immunity
A
- the ability to ward off damage of disease through our defenses
- has two general types: innate (nonspecific) immunity and adaptive (specific) immunity
2
Q
innate immunity
A
- immunity which does not involve specific recognition of a microbe (acts on all microbes the same way)
- includes the first line (skin, mucous membranes) and second (natural killer cells, phagocytes, inflammation, fever) lines of defense
3
Q
adaptive immunity
A
- immunity which involves the specific recognition of a microbe once it has breached the innate immunity defenses
- includes T lymphocytes (T cells) and B lymphocytes (B cells)
4
Q
lymphatic system
A
- the system which assists in circulating body fluids to help defend the body against disease-causing agents
- consists of a fluid called lymph, lymphatic vessels, organs containing lymphatic tissue, red bone marrow
5
Q
lymph
A
- interstitial fluid which has passed into a lymphatic vessel
- the only difference between this and interstitial fluid is the location, otherwise it is the same fluid
6
Q
lymphatic tissue
A
-a specialized form of reticular connective tissue which contains a large number of lymphocytes
7
Q
three primary functions of the lymphatic system
A
- draining excess interstitial fluid
- transporting dietary lipids
- carries out immune responses
