What is a HDD?
Hard Disk Drive(HDD). Are a form of mass storage device.
What is a Mass Storage Device?
Non-volatile storage device that holds the data when the system is powered down (GB or TB).
Types of Mass Storage?
Internal, and External.
Internal mass storage device.
Device that is placed inside the computer case or tower. Includes, hard disk drives, solid state devices, optical drives.
External mass storage device
Device that is placed outside the computer case or tower and connected to an external port. Includes external USB hard drive, or an eSATA drive.
Mass Storage Sizes
2.5in drive, 3.5in drives(these are reserved for internal HDDS and SDDs), and 5.25in drive(Reserved for optical drives, backup tape drives, and floppy disc drives.
Parts of a Hard Disk Drive(HDD)
Platter, Spindle, Read/Write Head, and Actuator.
Seeking and Retrieving data on a HDD?
Movement of the actuator and the read/write head to read data. Speed that is measured in revolutions per minute(RPM) gives better drive performance.
Hard Disk Drive Speeds
5400 RPM(Slowest Model), 7200 RPM(Faster performance), 10,000 RPM(High-performance gaming PCs), 15,000 RPM(Highest RPM, most expensive, don’t see a lot 15,000 hard drives
HDD Buffer Size
Internal buffer or cache on a hard disc drive(8 MB to 256 MB). The larger the buffer the better performance.
Connectors for HDD’s
7-pin(L-shaped data connector, 15-pin(L-shaped power connector). SCSI(supports either 7 or 15 devices in a daisy chain.
What is SDD?
Solid State Drive(SSD). Uses flash memory technology to implement persistent mass storage.
SSD Form Factor types?
2.5(used to replace a HDD inside a laptop or small desktop), 1.8(Used inside of small laptops), M2(Like a memory chip, small, sleek, and light to use in laptop. Is used more often for laptops then 1.8)
Connector types for SSD?
SATA(for old SSDs), mSATA, Non-volatile Memory Express(NVMe)
mSATA SSD Connector
Allows the SSD to be used as an adapter card that can be plugged into a combined data and power port on the motherboard. SSDs are faster than SATA speeds.
Non-Volatile Memory Express SSD Connector
A communication protocol used with the M2 form factor to plug directly into the motherboard.
What is a RAID?
Redundant Array of Independent Disks(RAID).Combination of multiple physical hard disks that is recognized by the operating system. Provide redundancy and high-availability.
Raid Types?
Raid 0, 1, 5, 6, 10
