2.2 Plate Tectonics Flashcards
1
Q
Tectonic plates
A
The former lies on stable sections of the earth’s crust called tectonic plates
2
Q
Plate boundaries
A
The latter are often affected by earthquakes or volcanoes along plate boundaries

Q
Types of plate boundary
A
- Collision plate boundary: occurs when two continental plates move towards each other (no volcanoes but violent earthquakes with fold mountains)
- Constructive/divergent boundary: occurs when two plates move away from each other (gentle volcanoes and earthquakes without fold mountains)
- Conservative plate boundary: occurs when two plates slide past each other (no volcanoes but violent earthquakes without fold mountains)
- Destructive/convergent boundary: occurs when oceanic plate is sub-ducted by a continental plate (violent volcanoes and earthquakes with fold mountains)
