Android OS
OS created by Google and used on most non-Apple mobile devices
Blogs/Weblogs
Websites updated regularly with news and events in chronological order. Reads like a journal with the most recent entry at the top
Bluetooth
Wireless technology that allows devices (such as mice, printers and cellphones) to communicate over a relatively short distance- typically less than 10m
Composing, sending, receiving of messages electronically over a network, including the Internet
FTP
File Transfer Protocol: Protocol used for the fast, easy transfer of large files between remote computers that have Internet connection
GPS
Global Positioning System: Navigation system that uses signals received from geo-stationary satellites to determine accurately (within 5m) the position of a receiving device
HTTP
HyperText Transfer Protocol: Protocol that defines how web pages and their content are transferred across Web
HTTPS
HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure: Protocol used for secure, encrypted communication over Internet. Used on websites that require user to enter confidential or personal info (such as passwords and banking details)
IM
Instant Messaging: Internet based alternative to text messaging, in which multimedia content can be exchanged in real time (via applications such as WhatsApp, BBM, Mxit)
iOS
OS found only on Apple devices such as iPhone and iPad
Microblogging
Posting of short text entries usually via cellphone or smartphone, on platform like Twitter
Mobile browser
Browser designed for use on mobile devices, incorporating innovations to accommoadate smaller screen sizes, and lower power profiles and processing abilities of these devices. Mobile-specific versions of website have ‘m’ prefix and end with ‘mobi’
Podcast
Audio file (often in MP3 format) made available for download from Internet. More often pre-recorded radio chat shows and talks, rather than music
POP3
Post Office Protocol 3: Most common Protocol used for downloading e-mail via Internet from POP3 servers
Protocol
Set of rules for encoding and decoding data for transmission across network
Smartphones
Cellphones with mobile OS and ability to run third-party software or ‘apps’. Generally include touch screen interface and multiple sensors for advanced functions such as GPS, accelerometer etc.
SMS
Short Message Service: SMS-ing (or texting) is sending short text messages from one cell phone to another. Popular and convenient because it allows direct communication without making phone call
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol: Most common Protocol used for sending e-mail via SMTP servers on Internet
Vlog
Video blog: Form of blog which uses video as the medium. Entries normally combine video supported by text and images
Vodcast
Video podcast: Form of podcast which includes video clips or photos and is downloaded and played as a movie
