2.2 Bonding and Properties Flashcards
1
Q
What are ionic bonding properties?
A
- high melting and boiling point
- conductivity: electrical and thermal when they have moving charge
- strength and hardness: held together by strong bonds making them strong but if ions align they are also brittle
2
Q
what is ionic bonding?
A
electrostatic attraction form a lattice and holds together the ionic bonding (+ and -)
3
Q
what are the metallic bonding properties?
A
- not attached to any one atom; delocalized
- high MP & boiling point
- conductive due to moving charge
- malleable and ductile
- lustrous (shiny - photons of light)
4
Q
what are allotropes?
A
same element with different structure arrangement
5
Q
covalent network bonding properties and explanation
A
- high MP: the covalent bonds that hold the atoms together are strong
- non-conductors of electricity in solid and liquid states: there are no charged particles that are free to move throughout the structure
- extremely hard and brittle solids: The bonds are very strong between atoms so it is difficult to scratch, but an impact force disrupts the position of the atoms and causes the network to shatter
- insoluble in water: There is no attraction between the atoms in the network and water molecules
