2.2 Bonding and Properties Flashcards

1
Q

What are ionic bonding properties?

A
  • high melting and boiling point
  • conductivity: electrical and thermal when they have moving charge
  • strength and hardness: held together by strong bonds making them strong but if ions align they are also brittle

Q

what are the metallic bonding properties?

A
  • not attached to any one atom; delocalized
  • high MP & boiling point
  • conductive due to moving charge
  • malleable and ductile
  • lustrous (shiny - photons of light)

Q

covalent network bonding properties and explanation

A
  • high MP: the covalent bonds that hold the atoms together are strong
  • non-conductors of electricity in solid and liquid states: there are no charged particles that are free to move throughout the structure
  • extremely hard and brittle solids: The bonds are very strong between atoms so it is difficult to scratch, but an impact force disrupts the position of the atoms and causes the network to shatter
  • insoluble in water: There is no attraction between the atoms in the network and water molecules
