1.3 Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Determine ionic charge and whether electrons will be lost, gained or shared
A
- atoms need to be stable - they achieve this by having a full valence shell
- if they lose electrons –> metallic or ionic
- if they gain electrons –> ionic or share electrons (covalent)
- if they are noble gas –> no bonding
2
Q
what are the diatomic elements?
A
- Hydrogen (H2)
- Nitrogen (N2)
- Oxygen (O2)
- Fluorine (F2)
- Chlorine (Cl2)
- Bromine (Br2)
- Iodine (I2)
3
Q
Rules for constructing ionic formulae including for compounds
A
- cation + anion
- not all cations are metals (ammonium (NH4+))
- anions if found on the periodic table change the ending to -ide
- transition metals: use roman numerals to indicate ion charge
4
Q
Formula writing to balance the charges of the ions
A
you need to balance the charges of the ions
5
Q
naming covalent compounds
A
the number of each atom needs to be included and 2nd atom ends in -ide
6
Q
formula of covalent compounds
A
the name tells you how many of each atom is present
1 = mono
2 = di
3= tri
4=tetra
5=penta
6=hexa
7=hepta
8=octa
9=nona
10=deca
7
Q
formulas of acids need to remember
A
hydrochloric acid = HCL
nitric acid = HNO3
sulfuric acid = H2SO4
carbonic acid = H2CO3
