2.2 biological molecules Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the structure of water
A
- covalently bonded Hydroegna nd water
- oxygen has a greater share of electrons so is slightly negative
- hydrogen is slightly positive
- seperation in charge is due to electron in covalent bonds being unevenly shared
- hydrogen bond form between other water molecules due to positive and negative regions of molecules attarcting each other
- hydorgen bond are weak therefore they constantly break and reform constantly moving the molecules
2
Q
list the properties of water
A
- excellent solvent
- good transport medium
- has a high boiling point/ shc
- has a high latent heat of vaporisation
- is a good raegant
- water as a solid is less dense than when liquid
- cohesive
- adhesive
3
Q
explain how water is a good solvent
A
substances such as ions or covalently bonded molecules are attracted to the polar water molecules therefore allowing for them to dissolve therefore making it a good transport medium
4
Q
explain how water has a high shc
A
- high boiling point so is a liquid at room temperature due ot the bydrogen bonding of molecules
- takes a lot of energy to increase temeperature of water and cause it to become gaseous
5
Q
explain how water has a high latent heat
A
6
Q
explain how water is less dense when a solid
A
7
