2.1.8 Moles and Gas Volumes Flashcards
1
Q
What is Avogadro’s law?
A
Under the same conditions of temperature and pressure, a mole of any gas would fill the same volume of space.
2
Q
What is molar gas volume?
A
The volume per mole of a gas. (dm3 mol-1)
3
Q
What are two ways in which we can measure gas volume during an experiment?
A
- Gas syringe
- A gas delivery tube leading into an upturned measuring cylinder in a water bath.
4
Q
How are gases presumed to behave in ideal way?
A
- They are in continuous motion and do not experience any intermolecular forces.
- They exert pressure when they collide with each other and the walls of containers.
- All collisions between gas molecules/container walls are elastic.
- The kinetic energy of gases increases with temperature.
- Any differences in sizes of different gas molecules can be ignored.
5
Q
What is the ideal gas equation?
A
pV = nRT
