21.4- ACID-BASE TITRATIONS Flashcards
What is a titration used to find?
conc. of solution by gradually adding to it a second solution with which it reacts
What is known about one of the solutions in titration?
solution is of known conc.
What happens in an acid-base reaction?
acid of known conc. added from burette to measured amount of solution of base until indicator shows that base has been neutralised
or base added to acid until acid neutralised
What can you measure following a neutralisation reaction?
measure pH with pH meter in which case you don’t need an indicator
How is a pH meter calibrated?
by placing probe in buffer solution of known pH
What is the equivalence point?
point at which sufficient base has been added to just neutralise acid
What can the equivalence point be used to work out?
conc. of unknown acid (or base)
