21.3 - Preserving Biodiversity Flashcards
Mass extinction
Over half of all species disappearing
Background extinction rates
1 species extinction per million species year : 10 million years = 10 species extinction
Species-area relationship/curve
Larger habitat = more species
Conservation of Biodiversity - Changing human behavior
Legislations - international treaties or national/state laws
Conservation of preserves
Area dedicated for certain species/organisms to develop without human interruptions (Often around biodiversity hotspots)
Biodiversity hotspots
Geographical areas with a high # of endemic species (Certain species that are only in specific regions of the world: panda, tigers)
Habitat restoration
Methods in order to maintain/restore biodiversity, ensuring keystone species are included
Keystone species
Most important species that the whole ecosystem depends on; Results in a ripple effect without them
Captive breeding
Inefficient, too artificial/dependent on human support - unable to survive in the wild
