19.2 - Population Growth & Regulation Flashcards
Exponential growth
J-shaped, growing fast with unlimited resources
Logistic growth
S-shaped, limited resources, maintained around a carrying capacity
Carrying Capacity
K, the max amount of organisms that a region can sustain
Intraspecific Competition
Individuals from the same species competing for resources
Interspecific Competition
Individuals from different species competing for resources
Limiting factors
Factors that affect the maximum number of the carrying capacity
Density dependent limiting factors
Occurs based density: Predation, competition, parasites, diseases, migration
Density independent limiting factors
Occurs regardless of density: Weather, natural disasters, pollution, temperature, sunlight, human activities
K-selected species
Few offspring with long lifespan and die around the same time, many resources provided; Many large animals
R-selected species (R-rats)
Many offsprings but little resources, many die and only a few live a full lifespan
