2.1.3 Key Terms Flashcards
Local Area Network (LAN)
Network that is usually confined to a single building and managed by a single entity
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
Consists of two or more LANs connected with private or public communication lined within the same geographical area
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Consists of a large number of networks and PCs connected with private and public communication lines throughout many geographic areas
Network Topology
Physical arrangement of computers, computer-related devices, communication devices, and cabling in a network
Bus topology
Network topology that uses a single cable or conductor to connect all nodes on a network
Star Topology
Network topology that involves running cables from each node to connect a single point
Ring Topology
Network topology that consists of a single cable that runs continuously from node to node
Multistation Access Unit (MAU)
Allow for the quick connection and disconnection of token ring cables while maintaining the logic of the ring topology
Mesh Topology
Network topology in which each node on the network connects to every other node on the network
Wireless Topology
Network topology that does not use cabling but rather infrared light or radio transmission to communicate between nodes
Hybrid Topology
Mixture of two or more network topologies
