1.1.1 Key Terms Flashcards
American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)
Early attempt to standardize data codes
Asynchronous Transmission
Data transmission method in which no reference signal is present
Broadcast Frame
Frame in which the destination address is filled with all ones; intended for every computer on a network
Circuit Switching
Data-routing method that establishes a permanent connection between two points for the duration of the data transfer period
Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC)
Based on the same principle for error detection as a parity check but uses mathematical algorithms to determine if any bits are corrupt
Data Encryption
Encoding of data based on a mathematical formula, which converts the original data symbol into another symbol
Digital Encoding
Occurs when network interface card converts data into a digital pattern acceptable to the network media
Encapsulation
Process of adding information to a segment that identifies such things as the source address and destination addresses, end of the segment, and size of the segment.
Frame
Packet that is encapsulated with information needed to travel the internet
Multicast frame
Frame that is intended for a preselected number of computers
Packet Switching
Data-routing method that does not use a permanent connection but rather breaks the data transmission into smaller parts called packets
Parity check
Method of verifying the integrity of transmitted data
Port
Logical connection that matched a service with a computer
Segment
Smaller, deliverable piece of data that contains information to aid in reassembly
Synchronous transmission
Data transmission method in which a digital signal is synchronized with a reference signal to ensure proper timing
