What are examples of informal representations?
popular media, photography, art, literature and poetry
What are demographics?
The statistical data of a population, especially those showing average age, income, education etc.
What can demographics tell us?
examples include: population, population density, age structure, gender and migration
What is the index of multiple deprivation?
This is a composite indicator (more that one element).
It is used to measure 38 separate indicators from 7 groups (domains). These include: Income, Employment, Health and disability ,Education,skills and training, Barriers to housing and services, Living environment, Crime
What does the bid rent theory tell us?
That as you move away from the PLVI the rental cost of the land decreases at different rates for different land uses.

What are some examples of processes that change settlements?
Filtering, globalisation, migration, gentrification, studentification
What is filtering?
The process whereby groups move away from the inner city towards the suburbs as their income increases.
What is gentrification?
the improvement of inner city areas/houses by higher income groups looking to move back into the inner city for shorter commutes and better access to opportunities.
What is globalisation?
The impact of world development on nations, regions, settlements and localities. The process by which the world is becoming increasingly interdependent as a result of increased integration and interdependence of the global economy.
What four sub categories can globalisation be broken down into? And explain each.
Economic- TNCs, online shopping, ICT development.
Political- The growth of trading blocs (e.g. EU) help TNCs
Social- Internation migration, social interconnectivity from technology, tourists( budget airlines)
cultural: circulation of ideas and information from the internet and social media
What is studentification?
A process that has increased following the added emphasis in the UK for a high percentage of the population to go to University from the 1980’s. So in cities with a university there is a high number of students living in the inner cities.
What data can be used to prove gentrification and or studentification in an area?
House price change, census data, media articles, income, student numbers etc
What is migration?
The movement of a person or a group of people, to settle in another place, often across a political or administrative boundary. Can be temporal or permanent and voluntary or forced.
