2.1.2 Flashcards
What is the charge of ions in group 1?
+1
What is the charge of ions in group 2?
+2, but some transition metals would have different numbers of ions so the roman numerals indicate the charge of the ion.
What is the charge of ions in group 3?
+3
What is the charge of ions in group 5?
-3
What is the charge of ions in group 6?
-2
What is the charge of ions in group 7?
-1
What is the charge of ions in group 8?
These do not form ions as they are stable and have a full outer shell.
What is the charge of ions in group 4?
These do not form ions they only bond covalently.
What is a binary compound and what are the rules for naming them?
A binary compound is a compound that contains two elements,
- use the name of the first element then change the ending of the second to -ide
- for metal ionic compounds use the metal name first.
When writing the charge what comes first number or +-?
Number then +/-
What are poly atomic ions?
Ions containing more than two elements?
Nitrate?
NO3(-)
Silver ion?
Ag(+)
Zinc ion?
Zn(2+)
Sulfate?
SO4(2-)
Carbonate?
CO3(2-)
Hydroxide?
OH(-)
Ammonium?
NH4(+)
Which elements exist as small molecules?
H2, O2, N2, F2, Br2, Cl2, I2, P4
What are the state symbols?
(s) =solid,
(l) =liquid,
(g) =gas,
(aq) =aqueous
What exists as (aq) ions in solution?
- Soluble ionic compounds
- Strong acids and bases
What do not exist as (aq) ions in solution?
- Insoluble ionic compounds
- Metal Hydroxides
- Covalent Compounds
