2.1.1 Cell Structure Flashcards
1
Q
what are the four key types of microscopes?
A
- light microscopes
- transmission electron microscopes
- scanning electron microscopes
- laser scanning confocal microscopes
2
Q
what are the slide preparations methods for a light microscope?
A
- **dry mounts **
- wet mounts
- squash slides
- smear slides
3
Q
what is a dry mount preparation?
A
Dry mounts are when thin slices or whole specimens are
viewed with just the coverslip placed on top e.g. plant tissue or hair.
4
Q
what is a wet mount preparation?
A
Wet mounts are when** water** is added to the specimen
before lowering the coverslip with a mounted needle to
prevent air bubbles from forming. Aquatic organisms
could be viewed this way.
5
Q
what is a squash slide preparation?
A
Squash slides are wet mounts which you then push
down on the coverslip to squash the sample to*** ensure
you have a thin layer to enable light to pass through. *
