2.1.1 Atomic structure and isotopes. Flashcards
Relative atomic mass.
-The weighted mean mass of the atoms of an element compared to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of C-12.
Relative molecular mass.
The weighted mean mass of a molecule of a compound compared to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of C-12.
Relative formula mass.
-The weighted meaan mass of the formula unit of a compound compared to 1/12th the mass of an atom of C-12.
Isotopes.
-Atoms of the same element with a different mass, the same number of protons (and electrons), but a different number of neutrons.
Relative isotopic mass.
-The mass of an atom of an isotope compared to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of C-12.
Proton
-Positivly charged particles that have a mass of 1 and a charge of 1+, found in the nucleus of an atom.
Electron
-Negatively charged particle with a mass of 1/1836 and a charge of 1-, orbits the nucleus of an atom at energy levels.
Neutron
-Particles with a charge of 0 and a mass of 1 which is found in the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic number
-The number of protons in an atom which also equals the number of electrons.
Mass number
-The number of protons and neutrons within an atom.
Orbital
-A region around the nucleus that can hold up to two electrons with opposite spins.
Shell
-Major energy level or principle quantum number. Made up of subshells.
Sub-shell
-Make up shells. Made up of orbitals.
